I am writing to you to inform you of a great musical opportunity that is coming to St Philip Howard. Buxton International Festival, in conjunction with Derbyshire Music Service, has given us and seven other secondary schools across Derbyshire the opportunity to perform The Orphans of Koombu for the first time in the UK.
The Orphans of Koombu is a mini-opera designed to put young voices at the centre of the performance. Over the course of eight sessions, students will work with a musical director, pianist and opera singer to learn the opera and develop their musical theatre skills. This is a great opportunity for children who are taking a GCSE in or have a keen interest in Drama or Music. There will also be extra opportunities for students in other areas of musical theatre such as meeting with costume designers and being introduced to lives of professional artists.
The sessions will take place from March to May of 2019 with a performance in school occurring after the Easter break. Students will also attend Buxton International Festival during July 2019 to take part in a rehearsal and performance of the opera during the festival itself. A contribution of a one-off £7 per student will be needed to fund the project.
They are looking for at least thirty participants from St Philip Howard. They are currently arranging some taster sessions at the school, but if you feel like this is something your child would like to be involved in please complete and send in the form below.
