HEADTEACHER CELEBRATES SUPERB FIRST YEAR AT HER NEW ACADEMY WITH RECORD-BREAKING GCSE RESULTS TOGETHER WITH £1M INVESTMENT IN FACILITIES BEING SECURED WITH MORE ON ITS WAY IN 2016/17!
Louisa Morris, Headteacher at St Philip Howard Catholic Voluntary Academy in Glossop, is reflecting on her first year at her Academy in Glossop and has told the Glossop Chronicle:
Firstly, congratulations go to our 95 Year 11 students who have this summer achieved the best ever GCSE results in the schools’ history. Results at our Academy show an incredible pass rate where 72% of students successfully achieved 5 GCSEs graded A*-C; 100% of students achieved an A*- C grade in GCSE Spanish and GCSE German; ALL our students leave with a GCSE qualification; and 100% of the students who undertook the English Baccalaureate (English, Maths, Science, History, Geography & Modern Foreign Languages) passed. These are truly impressive results when the bar has been significantly raised nationally and the exam system has seen such dramatic change.
The Class of 2016 have been a delightful group of young people and their achievements are well deserved. Their impact across St Philip Howard has been exceptional – really well done and thank you. We wish you all the very best for the future and every success in your lives ahead and ask that you keep in touch in with your St Philip Howard Family.
Following the recent investment in our new catering provision in June 2016, “The Lunch Box”, there is further good news – during the summer holiday period we have invested over £200,000 in new facilities and machinery within the Design Technology Department. This major investment follows a successful Condition Improvement Grant bid being awarded from our Sponsor, Nottingham Roman Catholic Diocese Education Service. We will also soon be seeking planning permission to use the old tennis courts and build a new Multi-Use Games Area (‘MUGA’) for use by our students in PE during the day and the wider-community at evenings and weekends.
Our Academy is looking good following significant IT investment; enhanced resources for learning for all students; and a whole school decoration programme. We are also developing the curriculum by launching two new subjects this new academic year 2016/17 – BTEC Engineering and BTEC Performing Arts which will add even more choice and variety to the educational and learning opportunities on offer to all our students.
Over the past academic year, St Philip Howard has been an incredibly busy place and I have been particularly delighted to welcome children from all our local primary schools. Children from KS2 have been enjoying a taste of daily life and high quality learning at our Academy in areas such as Science, Maths, English, Computer Science, Catering and even
The Academy is also involved in a national peer mentoring project and we are currently supporting other schools around the UK to roll this programme out. All the staff are looking forward to welcoming our students back on Wednesday 7 September 2016 and we especially look forward to welcoming our new Year 7 students into the St Philip Howard Family. What makes our Academy truly special is that all our students, regardless of age, look after each other during the day whether it be before or after school, or during lunch and break time periods. Student well-being is an absolute priority since we wish all students to be happy and content whilst attending St Philip Howard. High expectations of behaviour; standards of appearance; conduct; work ethic; and a determination to succeed whilst at St Philip Howard is our recipe for ‘successful happy children’.
I must thank all my colleagues who are an outstanding team of staff who guided, coached and inspired our students throughout this last academic year. Without their professional expertise, stamina and endless patience our superb examination results would not be achieved. One of the myths about our Academy is that whilst we are catholic school we welcome all children at St Philip Howard regardless of their faith or background. There are currently a limited number of spare places in some year groups so if you wish to find out more about our superb learning opportunities, please contact Kim Ward, Head’s PA, on 01457 853611 to book an appointment to meet with me and have a tour of the Academy.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the people in our community who have given me such fantastic support over this last year at St Philip Howard. I continue to look forward to the Academy continuing to flourish in partnership with all of our families and the wider community. We are ‘The Best Performing Secondary School in Glossop’ and I am immensely proud to be the Headteacher at St Philip Howard. Finally, we have our Open Evening taking place on Thursday 29 September 2016, 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm, we invite you to come and find out more about the educational opportunities at St Philip Howard and how we can enable your child to be happy and very successful.”
